The all new 2014 Sierra is set to arrive this summer at our dealership and is coming with quite a few safety features never seen before including Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. However, as innovative as these are, the manner in which these alerts will be delivered is equally innovative. These warnings will be delivered by GMC’s Safety Alert Seat.
With the Safety Alert Seat owners are alerted via a vibration through the surface of the driver’s seat bottom cushion. When the Lane Departure Warning system’s camera detects the Sierra is leaving a lane without a turn signal, a vibration to the left or right seat bolster directs the driver’s attention to the side of the lane encroachment. When a potential collision is detected ahead by Forward Collision Alert, both sides of the seat vibrate.
Forward Collision Alert uses a camera behind the windshield to monitor traffic ahead and estimate time to collision. A green vehicle shaped icon on the instrument cluster lets you know there is a vehicle ahead, in addition to the vibration, when your Sierra gets too close to the vehicle ahead of you it turns orange and when you’re approaching a vehicle too rapidly it flashes red. This is all of course in addition to the optional Safety Alert Seat.
Sierra’s other active safety features include stabilitrak, rear vision camera, front and rear park assist and other technologies like trailer sway control and an integrated trailer brake controller.
